HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Course (CPR)
CPR doubles a victim’s chance of survival. With a CPR course it’s almost triple. In the CPR component of your CPR and first aid course, you’ll learn techniques for reviving both children and adults, using the following technique:
DRSABCD Emergency Protocol:
- Danger: Always assess hazards to yourself, bystanders, and the patient before approaching. Check for traffic, fuel leaks, electrical hazards, or unstable structures
- Response: Test for consciousness by talking loudly, tapping shoulders, or squeezing hands. Determine if the person can respond to you
- Send for help: Call 000 immediately or instruct someone else to do so. Don’t delay professional medical assistance
- Airway: Open the mouth and check for obstructions. Tilt the head back slightly to open the airway if the person is unconscious
- Breathing: Look for chest movements and listen for breathing sounds. If breathing normally, place in recovery position
- CPR: Start chest compressions (30 compressions to 2 breaths ratio) if the person is not breathing normally
- Defibrillation: Apply an AED as soon as available and follow the device’s voice prompts for electrical shock delivery
How to Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that delivers electric shocks to a victim to help restart their heart during a cardiac arrest.
AEDs can increase cardiac arrest survival rates by up to 75% when used correctly, but when the time comes, some people are afraid to use them for fear of unfamiliarity. The good news is that they’re not just automatic, they’re designed to be so intuitive that anyone can use them under the pressure of an emergency.
An AED should be used when a person is unconscious, is not breathing normally, and no pulse is detected. To use an AED:
- Power On: Press the power button or lift the lid (some units activate automatically when opened)
- Attach the Pads: Remove clothing from chest and apply electrode pads, one below right collarbone and one on the lower left ribs
- Clear the Patient: Ensure nobody is touching the victim
- Deliver the Shock: Press the shock button when AED advises
- Follow Voice Prompts: the AED will instruct you whether to administer a shock or to continue CPR
Refresher First Aid and CPR Training Courses
CPR and first aid skills deteriorate and what felt natural right after training can feel uncertain when dealing with a real emergency. First aid in particular is constantly changing with newer and better techniques and equipment. CPR and first aid refresher courses can help rebuild muscle memory and introduces updated practices based on the latest medical research.
- First Aid Certificates: Must be renewed every three years to maintain compliance
- CPR Certification: Requires annual renewal as per Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines
- Industry Requirements: Some workplaces (healthcare, education, construction) may require more frequent updates
Tailored First Aid Training Courses
HLTAID012 First Aid in an Education and Care Setting
CPR and first aid skills for young children requires a different approach. This course covers age-specific care for children under twelve, and the importance of documentation for childcare workers and teachers. The minor differences mean this course is only slightly longer than a standard first aid course, making it perfect for not just childcare workers, but also parents curious about how to best look after their kids.
HLTAID013 Provide First Aid in a Remote or Isolated Site
When you’re hours away from medical help, the skills covered by a standard CPR and first aid course aren’t enough. A remote first aid course covers prolonged care, infection control, and how to access emergency response services when the closest one is miles away. This course is perfect for anyone working in isolated locations, such as miners, rangers, or who just lives hours away from emergency help.
HLTAID014 Advanced First Aid
Incidents like crushing, childbirth, substance abuse, and hypothermia/hyperthermia need more advanced skills. This course covers first aid for advanced situations where multiple people are injured, spinal injury immobilisation, and how to prioritise treatment when resources are limited.
